The Office of the Registrar for the Graduate School at Weill Cornell Medical College is the official custodian of unabridged student academic records past, present, and future. The Registrar's staff plans and conducts student registration, maintains and updates academic records, interprets and applies academic policies, verifies enrollment and Master and Doctoral degrees awarded.
Academic curriculum policies are administered by the individual programs.

Establishing registration status
Registration is the first step in your study at Weill Cornell Graduate School (WCGS). Once registered with WCGS, you will have established your student status and be able to use Weill Cornell's many resources. You must be registered each Quarter until you finish your degree or withdraw from the program. You do not have to register if you are granted a leave of absence. The Office of the Registrar determines student registration status. In order to be considered a registered student, a student must enroll in at least one course, or enroll in a graduate thesis/dissertation research course.
Changing your registration status
You must notify WCGS and the Registrar's Office if you wish to withdraw, take a leave of absence, or otherwise cease to be registered.
Enrolling in Courses
Follow these steps to register for courses other than Lab Rotations, the Admission for Candidacy (ACE) Exam, Dissertation Research, and Final Dissertation Exam:
- Review current course offerings and other important registration instructions posted in the Graduate Schedule of Classes:
- Fall Term (Quarter I and II) – September to January
- Spring Term (Quarter III and IV) – January to June
- Summer Term (Quarter V) – June to September
- Log into LEARN the on-line registration system; https://learn.weill.cornell.edu/ics
- Use the step by step instructions on How to Register in LEARN;
- If you have technical issues using the system please email ITS Support (firstname.lastname@example.org).
All Graduate students must register within the first three weeks of each academic term by logging into the LEARN System. This includes:
- All PhD students, even those who have completed their required course work and are taking strictly “Dissertation/Thesis Research;”
- All MD/PhD students who are in their WCGS PhD degree phase, even those who have completed their required coursework and are taking strictly “Dissertation/Thesis Research;”
- All PhD new incoming students must complete the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Course during their first Fall Term. The RCR Course must be renewed every four years.
- All PhD 1st-3rd Year students must register for Lab Rotations.
Anyone that is not full admitted into the Graduate School, but seeking to take PhD level course please contact the Registrar’s Office on how to submit the Application for Non-Degree Graduate.
Auditing Courses: Auditing a course allows students to regularly attend the class, but do not participate in all aspects of the course. Some professions do not allow student to audit a course.
The Graduate School does not use a credit or a GPA grading scale. Check with individual Graduate Programs for other grading policies specific to the Program.
Presently grades are recorded as follows:
H=Honors; HP=High Pass; LP=LP; P=Pass, F=Fail. I=Incomplete; AUD=Audit; W=Withdrawn, EX=Except; NG=Non-graded Course; WIP=Work in Progress
- Incompletes: Students who do not finish all the course work by the end of the course, the professor may assign an Incomplete and allow time to finish. However, this is at the digression of the professor and my instead deduct unfinished work from your final course grade.
- Dropping Courses: Review the Academic Calendar for the last day to drop a course without having a Withdrawn posted on a transcript.
Weill Cornell Graduate School offers several opportunities for Weill Cornell PhD students to take courses at another campus through Exchange Programs with the recommendation and approval from your Program Director.
Scholarly Exchange Program: This includes one or two semesters in residence at another major research university participating in the Exchange Scholar Program (Berkeley, Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Harvard, M.I.T., Princeton, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, or Yale). To be eligible, you should have completed at least year. Applications must be submitted to the Graduate School a minimum of two months before your intended period of study.
You may also attend a course or two at a nearby college or university to fulfill an academic requirement that cannot be met at Weill Cornell. WCGS currently has established affiliations and agreements with CUNY-Graduate Center, The Rockefeller University Graduate Program, Grestner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Hunter College. To graduate, student must satisfy the academic and research requirement imposed by the academic Program and the student’s Special Committee, submission of final dissertation (within 60 days after defense), and pay all outstanding bursar bills. Doctoral student must file a dissertation within seven years of first registering in the Weill Cornell Graduate School (exceptions may be granted by the Dean). Master’s student must file a thesis within four year of first registration in the Weill Cornell Graduate School (exceptions may be granted by the Dean).
Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences confers degrees three times throughout the academic year: August, January and May.
Verification and Transcript Requests
Our office is happy to assist current students, former students and alumni with requests of enrollment status, dates of attendance, and graduation information, transcripts, In-School loan deferments. In order to release your academic information, please complete the WCGS Document Request Form that must include a hand written signature (we will also accept and Adobe electronic signature). Requests are processed within 7-10 business days.
Requests from third-party screening agencies may be mailed or faxed to the Office of the Registrar along with a written signed release from the alumni or former student. As dictated by the Federal FERPA Law, information regarding academic records can only be released upon written consent of the student or alumni. We are not able to provide verbal verification.
Please complete the Diploma Order Form. All diplomas are sent via postal mail, first-class for domestic (US) mailing and airmail for international mailings. Please allow 30 days from the mailing date to receive your diploma.
- January diplomas will be mailed to the home address in mid to late February.
- May diplomas will be mailed to the home address in mid to late June.
- August diplomas will be mailed to the home address in med to late September.
