2020 Commencement Graduating Student To-Do List

Step 1: Submit Graduation Application with Registrar’s Office 

If you have not completed the Graduation Application form, please contact the Registrar ( immediately.

Step 2: Submit WCM Commencement Forms

Graduate Students (PhD/ MS / PA)

Medical Students (MD/ MD-PhD)

Step 3: Order Regalia 

Students who complete this step will be sent regalia pick up information in early April. All ordered regalia is picked up in the Olin Lobby area.

Day of Commencement

Timeline for Commencement Day: 

10:15 am: All students arrive to Carnegie Hall 
11:30 am: Doors open for Special Needs and Handicap seating
11:40 am: Doors open for General seating
12:00 pm: Commencement Ceremony starts
2:00 pm: Ceremony concludes
2:30-4:30 pm: Commencement Reception

 Directions to Carnegie Hall

You should plan to arrive at Carnegie Hall no later than 10:15 am.  Please allow yourself ample time to travel to Carnegie Hall as it is in a congested area. Students should enter via the Stage Door, 161 West 56th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenue.  If you are not on the procession line by 11:30 am, you will not be allowed to march.  There will be no place in the Orchestra Room to leave personal items.  Please leave your jackets/sweaters, purses, flowers, cameras - any other personal items with your guests.


You will be allowed to take pictures after the ceremony, but you must return the cap, gown, and hood inside Carnegie Hall.  After the ceremony ends, you will have 30 minutes to take pictures with your guests and return all academic regalia in the classroom where you lined up. Once you receive a ticket, you will be able to receive your diploma at the Hilton where the reception will be held. If you do not return your regalia, you will not receive your diploma.

Diplomas for August and January graduates of the Graduate School have already been distributed; if you did not receive your diploma, please contact the Office of the Registrar. Diplomas for May - Doctor of Medicine graduates will be distributed at the Hilton reception that follows commencement. Diplomas for May Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science graduates will be shipped directly to students within 4 weeks of the commencement ceremony. All graduates will receive empty envelopes on stage at Carnegie Hall.


As a graduate, how many invitations and tickets will I receive? 

Each student can receive up to 4 tickets. Only Graduating students who plan to walk AND who have completed the graduation to-do list will be eligible for extra guest tickets. These tickets are not guaranteed. Students will be notified two weeks before Commencement if their extra guest ticket request is granted. Sign up on the extra ticket waitlist here.

How long is the ceremony? 

The length of the ceremony can vary, but it is generally about two and a half (2.0) hours in length. 

When will I get my diploma?
As diplomas are not distributed during Commencement, they are either sent to your home or picked up at the reception following Commencement. For additional information, please reach out to the Registrar Office.

Is there reserved seating?
There is no reserved seating. 

Are there any other events happening in addition to the Commencement ceremony?
Yes, the Commencement Reception will be held after Commencement at locations TBD. 

Does my child need a ticket?
Yes, children can attend the ceremony and require a ticket, regardless of age. 

If I am graduating and participation in the ceremony, do I have to wear a cap and gown?
Yes, all participating students and faculty must be robed. Students please see Step 3 in the Graduating To-Do List for cap and gown order intructions. 

As a graduate, do I go up on stage during the ceremony?
Yes, each candidate will go up on stage after their name is announced to meet with the President and Dean. 

If I am graduating and participating in the ceremony, will I need a ticket?
No. You will enter at the Stage Door Entrance (161 West 56th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenue). Security personnel will have a list of names at the stage door and will ask you to identify yourself. 

Where does faculty pick up their regalia?
You will be picking up your regalia at Carnegie Hall the morning of Commencement in The Citigroup Café.
